Yes, you can get a virus by visiting websites (pr0n are the worst ones) -- they will execute a script and plant one on your machine.

I have ZoneAlarm Pro, Kaspersky, Greatis and have been able to reject multiple attacks. ...just don't leave it on automatic, pay attention! (i've learned quite a bit so far).
