    convert mpeg's to avi

then strip the wav from avi in virtualdub
convert the wav to mp3 with a converting program (i like dbpoweramp)

then zip/rar the combined avi and mp3 files

should knock quite a bit off the filesize

whenever you want to view again, unpack zip/rar, re-convert mp3 back to wav and combine in tmpgenc
