Well alan36uk rather there are better web browsers or not is a matter of opinion.
I like Opera and Mozilla(Netscape annoys me).

    I prefer IE 6, However
I wish they had not intergrated it to Windows XP shell.

Here are the two methods for reinstalling IE 6:
First make sure your logged in as administrator.

Method 1. Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files
    on your computer.
Click Start>Run>in the Open boxtype sfc/scannow and then click OK.
(you may be asked for your Windows XP or Windows XP SP1 instalation media)
2.Test to determine if the issue is resolved,if it is skip the remaining steps,if not
    continue to the next step.
3.Complete an in-place upgrade of Windows XP,A repair of XP or reinstall
Windows XP. Directions for doing this are in the following Microsoft Knowledge
Base article.315341 How To Perform An In -Place Upgrade Of Windows XP
    4.Then reinstall Windows XP updates.

Method 2: Edit the registry and install IE 6 Be careful here,I dont know if you have edited your registry before?

When you try and reinstall the same version of IE you may recieve the following error message. Setup has detected a newer version of IE already installed on this system. Setup cannot continue.

To advoid this error and reinstall the same version of IE follow these steps:

    1. Log in as administrator and Click Start>Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
3.Locate the the appropriate registry subkey, right click the IsInstalled(REG_DWORD)value,and then click Modify.

    To Reinstall IE 6 in Windows XP use this Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Componets\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
4.Change the value data from the 1 to 0,then click OK.
    5.Quit regedit,and then install IE 6
    6.Reinstall all Windows XP updates.

I hope I have been some help, and good luck!

    Peace brotherdoobie

Hey alan36uk.......I was so busy telling you how to reinstall IE 6 that I forgot to mention a pretty importain fact.

You might not have to do any of this.
It sounds like you have spyware on your computer(specificly a Browser Hijacker)
Do you use an ad-ware spy-ware scanner?
If not download Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy(use both
of them, one detects what is missed by the other and vice-versa)
Follow the directions in the help files and scan your computer for spyware.
delete what you find (but read the help files first) they both back-up everything found in case you accidently delete something you should not have.

This sounds like what your problem is.
Try this first! If it doesnt,it's because IE has became corrupted and you wil have to reinstall.

DL the programs I mentioned anyway they are a must for any internet user.
    Make sure you update frequently.

    Peace brotherdoobie
