Many have banned anything under 1.7.6. Some have allowed 1.6.1 to still be used as they've determined it to be the only version without the problem.

They have only corrected it on one server, meaning 50% of the time people will see the old one that says 1.6.x is affected.

i also use 1.6.1 and will keep using it as long as possible.
the question here is that the most recent versions include some callbacks to their site and there is a fairly high possibility that they use it to monitor what you download. Like it was mentioned before that its the client that's going to be banned, not your actual account. So far 1.7.6 seems to be working just fine.
