i have no problems with rars at all. it takes barely 10 minutes to unrar a dvdr (less time than if you were to drive to the store and buy it). and it makes it much easier to seed to other 0-day sites. if this were not the case, you would have less seeders on every site, because people would only be able to seed the specific version of the file from that site.
and as far as the space that all the files take up? give me a break, get a new hard drive. i'm not trying to be an ass, but sotrage is so cheap these days that it's dumb not to. yea, i can see how a few years ago, not having enough HDD would be a decent enough argument, but not now. i'm too lazy to check the prices on new egg, but come on, it's barely anything. especially if you are getting something for free in a proven system of distribution

I agree.....RAR's r annoying but there r some benefits of it the main one being is that u can partial seed torrents

as other people have said, storage space is cheap, but bandwidth is not, so unfortunately file size is a limiting factor for many downloads. rars are somewhat annoying, but definitely necessary.

1) if you start unraring files and then uploading them, it would definitely affect the pretimes.
2) there tend to be 1 or 2 corrupted rars in some releases which are easily fixed easily by just dloadin a few megs. else you would have to redownload the entire file
3) about BMTV, torrents there are rarely over 1 G. for big files its very difficult without rars, not only for uploading but also downloading
4) and if you want 0day apps unrared..there are soo many of them released everyday, it will be a real pain in the ass to download them, extract each and every one of them (most of them have a zip archive inside the rar) and then upload them. this process will take much more time and is practically very unfeasible
Heres why rars are used in the first place..
scene groups release the files on ftp servers. when these files are uploaded to 0day sites and topsites, there may be more than one uploader uploading a particular release (something called as racing). hence its very convenient if each of them uploads a few rars. results in much faster transfers. Also, back when scene groups started using rars, there used to be lots of errors in ftp and fxp transfers. hence it was a much better idea to reupload a single corrupted rar file than the entire release.
bottomline is, rars were not invented for torrents and hence they might have a few drawbacks when it comes to torrenting. but they are here to stay unless scene groups start using torrents as their preferred method of distribution (go figure the chances of that happening!)

that mean unpacking scene releases and releasing them without giving credit.

also means bigger files to seed/leech and importanly to seed back.

also means only the uploader can seed it, you wont get 10 seeds as soon as its uploaded.

Uploaders wont want the hasstle to download a scene release, unrar it, and then make a torrent of both (if they are an uploader of 2 sites)

tbh, i avoid 1 file torrents like the plague now, i have been hit with to many 99% and not finishing at all, uploader has to then reupload the whole lot, very annoying, also you can get CRC errors on 1 file movies, problem is you dont know there is an error until you are 3/4 the way through the movie and it crashed or skips badly.

Rars ftw for me im afraid, which is why BCG will always be multi rars.
