Absolutely no doubt about it.

I worked in Sarf End many years ago and my bestest chum there was from New Castle. We couldn't make out a word of each others accent when sober. However with the simple addition of large quantities of alcohol that was easily solved.

The reactions of the locals to a pair of large drunks, one from New Castle and one from Glasgow was interesting. We rarely found difficulty in getting to the bar.
