Warning Hacker Scam!

I received a email and thought I was going to lose my cable internet!! I called the cable company and they never sent me this email. It seems that a hacker either has my credit card number or something, and is trying to get my personel info!!

Dear Customer,

We are writing on behalf of Cox Communications to advise you that we have received a notification that you are using your Cox High Speed Internet service to post or transmit material that infringes the copyrights of a complainant's members. We have included a copy of the complaint letter. Pursuant to the provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA"), which is codified at 17 U.S.C. § 512, upon receiving such notification, Cox is required to "act expeditiously to remove, or disable access to" the infringing material in order to avoid liability for any alleged copyright infringement. © a statement under penalty of perjury that the subscriber has a good faith belief that the material was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification of the material to be removed or disabled;
(d) the subscriberÂ's name, address, and telephone number and a statement that the subscriber consents to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for the judicial district in which the address is located.

In the event that you submit to Cox a counter-notification that includes these elements, Cox will forward your counter notification to the complainant and advise them that Cox will cease disabling access to the allegedly infringing material in ten (10) business days. Unless the complainant notifies us that it has filed an action seeking a court order to restrain you from engaging in the allegedly infringing activity prior to the expiration of those ten (10) business days, Cox will reactivate your account.

That is the crazy part, I did download the movie. That is why I thought it was real!! I'm just thankful I'm not losing my Cable As my only other option would be direct tv internet. Is it possible for a hacker to get my email address from my IP?? I keep my email address private and always use a hotmail one for reg and when ordering anything.

That's some strange stuff I don't know how could that be any body but your company. Well I guess as long as your not losing your cable its alright. But if that happens again u should call back and make sure u don't have any trojans on your comp. Because thats the only thing I know that can do that unless it was a real hacker.

Protects you from automated scanning program

2.Hide behind a anonymous proxy

Hide your IP.Even they pretend as P2P users all they get is the proxy's IP,not yours.

I didnt think they'd catch u if u use bittorent...m i being delusional... will isp really go after u if u use bittorent. THis email makes me wonder.. even though its a scam could it happen?

I was using norton 03 firewall at the time. I have since switched to zone alarm pro 4.0 So hopefully this problem doesn't happen again. I need to look into hiding behine a proxy.

Hey that e-mail could be real, if Universal find your ip they could then look up your hostname which would tell them which isp you're using. They could also so a whois on you wich would give them alot of info, just watch your back and be careful because I've heard that Universal have been cracking down ALOT.
