export email and contacts from Goldmine?

My dad has goldmine 6.5 and wants to switch to something else like thunderbird or just outlook. the problem is he needs to find a way to get his contacts AND email out of goldmine. Goldmine keeps every email, and he wants to be able to save them all.
also, are there any less proprietary programs that store all the emails. or is there a way to uplod all of those email to gmail?

I know there are programs out there that will do this, but they are not very common (pirateable)

Once I did this job. I found software "GoldMine Integration Services for Microsoft Outlook" (source emule, you know what I mean) and I migrated all contacts from GoldMine to Outlook.
