Megaupload was shut down by the U.S. federal authorities and the domain was confiscated, pending the trial(s) it will remain so. Kim Dotcom however is happily kicking it here in N.Z. fighting extradition, and being a constant thorn in the government's side because they fucked up on the surveillance before his arrest (timed to happen during his birthday party, how nice). He has even started a new political party to contest the local elections and since our country uses the M.M.P. proportional representation style of government, his party will become part of the government if he and his party get enough votes....fingers crossed.

Meanwhile he has started up another hosting site mega.co.nz, but megaupload.ws is a copy of the name using a free domain (ws = Western Samoa and the domains are free) so it has nothing to do with the original and being a copy of the name is probably dodgey as....

Mixed emotions on such a fellow representing anyone. Nice he's motivated to fight back against US abuse of power; not ready to treat him as anything but a reflexive action against that abuse. Neither side is respectable, IMO.

It's more a fuck you to our nazi Prime Minister (head honcho) John Key, than anything else, the Internet Party as it is called doesn't really have an agenda on many issues, but it sure is a pain in the arse to our beloved leader. Other things he has done to fuck the government off which have been brilliant is offer to sponsor Team New Zealand for the next America's Cup challenge after the government muttered darkly about reviewing their commitment, bringing an assurance that they would continue to support Team NZ. I like the guy, he has stood up to a massive amount of pressure from two governments and their assorted spy agencies, fought them in court and proven them to use illegal tactics in surveillance and illegal search and arrest procedures. He has forced them to return his property (computers and phones etc.) and managed to rub their noses in it at every turn.

I agree we need somebody to fight back against (and make public) the violations of rights to privacy and property these governments (all of them, it seems) are doing. It just does not make Dotcom any more of a hero than, say, Larry Flint was for championing free speech. Not to say there cannot be benefits from dubious characters kicking, biting, screaming, and flailing...But, at the center of it, they are doing these things not for the good of mankind, but for their own self-interest/preservation.
