Thread: Riaa

I know this has been talked about a million times. I don't care.

I have a few questions about the RIAA stuff.

    1. How do they know if you are sharing a file?

    2. Does that new ip thing work and not let the RIAA see you?

    3. Has anything really happened with the subpeonas?

    4. If you download a file and then never share it would the RIAA ever catch you and fine you?

    5. WHat about movies? Are they going after people sharing movies yet?

    6. Should I really be scared that I will get a subpeona if I just download stuff?

    1. How do they know if you are sharing a file?
they wont know that your sharing a file if you check the box that says no users can get a list of your files.

    2. Does that new ip thing work and not let the RIAA see you?
I'd say it works. not many people have been cought.

    3. Has anything really happened with the subpeonas?
no nothing has happened with the subpeonas. there just investigating.

    4. If you download a file and then never share it would the RIAA ever catch you and fine you?

Everybody take a breather and go to

    http://eff.org

This is where all the info about what is happening is located.

Yes if you get a subpoena it could be a big deal.

Yes they could get you if you are acting as a supernode - or sharing files.

People have been busted while using Peer Guardian and Firewall while on bittorrent. I am not sure about Kazaalite.

Yes this refers primarily to people in the US - although I am not sure what is up in other countries right now.

You can check your ip at http://eff.org to see if you have been subpoena'd or your isp has. You can also submit the subpoena to their online database there - and someone there (attorneys) may help you. It is really important to do this if you get a cease and desist, or a subpoena, because it helps EFF fight what may come next.

Keep checking at EFF for all the best up to date news on what is happening. The subpoena thing is step one - no one is really sure what step two is. Might be this.

    1. They use KaZaA to find a song title. When they find a file with that title they try to DL it. Then they have the IP, and the DL'ed song as evidence.

    2. It works for IPs that are on the BannedIPlist. If they use a new IP with no known connection to anti-piracy authorities, point 1. will go in effect.

    3. AFAIK not yet.

    4. Only if you are extremely unlucky and you got it from a supernode owned by the IRAA. But doing that would make you a leech.

    5. MPAA is thinking of jumping on the IRAA bandwagon.

    6. atm there are 3131108 users online. 1000 / 3131108 = very low.
The ods of someone with a shotgun knocking on your door for leaching is bigger.
