Microsoft again delays Win XP SP3

Microsoft on Tuesday said it is delaying the release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 because of a newly uncovered glitch. The software maker said there is a “compatibility issue” between the XP service pack and Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System, a retail chain management program for small and midsize businesses. Microsoft finalized the code for Windows XP SP3 last week and had planned to make it broadly available starting Tuesday. “In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center,” the company said in a statement.

The glitch also exists between Microsoft Dynamics RMS and Windows Vista Service Pack 1, though that product has already been broadly released. Microsoft started pushing out Vista SP1 last week via Automatic Updates. “To help protect our customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS,” Microsoft said. “Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Download Center.” Microsoft advised those running Microsoft Dynamics RMS to not install either service pack. The company said a “fix is currently in testing and will be available as soon as that process is complete.”

Just in time to highlight their latest push of Microsoft Dynamics.

It's a shame they haven't bothered to make this announcement prominent (or even available?) on their website, I might just have saved myself some time yesterday trying to work out when the release of SP3 was actually going to be available. Morons.

The announcement was posted in their SP3 section of the M$ TechNet forum, but you're right. They don't seem to really have much in terms of public announcements unless you REALLY REALLY know where to look which in any case involves a fair amount of searching.

I think they need to realize that there's an actual Internet culture that exists and that the people involved in it (Developers, Consumers, etc.) are actually interested in following different events/headlines for their varied interests. Hell, you should see my iGoogle page I like to stay informed.

I shall be waiting a little while before applying SP3 anyway... well it wouldn't be the first time they released features to help persuade people to upgrade their operating system...

On May 6, Microsoft both released officially SP3 and resumed automatic distribution of Windows Vista SP1. Distribution of both of the Windows service packs was halted when Microsoft discovered a compatibility glitch involving them and Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System, according to company officials.

Here’s Microsoft’s update on the situation, via a spokeswoman:

“Following last week’s discovery of a compatibility issue between both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista SP1 and Microsoft Dynamics RMS, Microsoft created and deployed a filter on Windows Update that will not offer either service packs to Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers. A fix for this issue is currently in testing at Microsoft and with customers and we hope to make it publicly available this month. Until then, Microsoft is advising Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install either service pack. Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers running Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services for additional information.”

Microsoft released to manufacturing XP SP3 on April 21 — and after outcry for its paying TechNet and Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscribers — released the update to them shortly thereafter
