    i like to use the manufacturer diagnostic software, its free and simple. you can download it from manufacturer website.

    samsung: hutil
    seagate/maxtor: seatools for dos/ seatools for windows
    WD: WD data lifeguard

    i dont remember the others manufactures diagnose tools.

    I like a boot disk like Barts or Ultimate Boot . For software in windows, Tuneup 2008 or WinDoctor from Norton as i6q suggests .
