v0/VBR release

I'm sure I should of learned this a long time ago but when you download or upload music it is sometimes labeled v0 or VBR. what does it mean.
I know lots of trackers only allow certin quality(not under192kbps)
just wanted to clear things up!

also anyone have a good tutorial on uploading lossless music with logs&cue/s?

VBR stands for Variable bit rate. If you use windows media player, it rounds to the nearest CBR, but in iTunes or most other players it should display the proper bitrate.

V0 is the highest setting for ripping in VBR, and i believe it's usually comes out at around 220-280kbps VBR. (according to Hydrogen Audio it's ~230 for v0)

Yeah I had also noticed this "V0" situation @ W.CD and teh WAFFLEZ.

Thanks for the info TSOL. IMO 192 works fine, but VBR is nice quality too (320 = overkill, size-wise, esp. to put musics in 20GB U2 iPod)

yeah np I agree that 320 is overkill, especially when the album's last tracker has like 10 minutes of empty space before a bonus track starts.

My dl preference for quality goes: V0 > V1 (these arn't very common) > V2 (scene releases) > 320CBR , then so on.. If i can't find the album in VBR on one tracker I'll normally look through others before settling at a CBR bitrate. Villageshaman, if you like 192CBR rips you should consider downloading V2 instead. The sound quality in much better and the file sizes are only a fraction larger, and smaller if there are gaps of empty space in the tracks. CBR is very inefficient spacewise

so if VBR is any where from 220 to 280 and V0 230 their does not seem to be much difference! so why the big stink over labeling at trackers.

alot of people prefer v0 to v2. you shouldnt label based on the average bitrate, you should use Mr. Question Man and it will tell you what it was ripped at. I would be mad too if i downloaded something labelled v0 and it turned out to be anything other than v0. if you dont know how to label you also probably dont understand transcodes, which are even worse. I would refrain from uploading at that tracker. if its whatcd or waffles people will definately report you for either of those mistakes

So V2 is also VBR?

I should replace my 192 with that then...but it will be a long and painstaking process..

Many groups in the early scene just made release in 192kbps bitrate
