Ok i was having a huge argument with my Uni teacher last night over the fact that I thought it was Ok to be able to ripp your OWN bought collection of CDs onto your HD.

He was to the fact that it was ilegal and had to document that crap for the up and coming assignment of a fictional company that I have to do.

Now is it illegal to rip your own collection onto your HD??

I alwasy thought it is ok

I think its pretty f*cked if you bought your own CDs and you still can't do whatever you want with them.

If im right link me to proof please?

If Im wrong then I admit Im wrong

    thanks

i think it's alright just as long as you don't sell it or anything. the proof is that the bigtime media players out there have added that feature in so it must be legal. otherwise the companies like Real Media and Windows Media wouldn't be able to put it in their programs. look at the back of your CD cover to make sure. it usually says something about reproduction.

I dont know about using the word rip ( cuz its kind of a hmm..." criminal" word lol i dont know ), but if you "copy" ( well rip) your songs with Windows Media Player then its legal and all. i dont know about other stuff. But we never said anything about trading them online.

Yes, its perfectly legal to make a backup copy of anything u already own but u can't distribute it. If u want a link just search on yahoo for something of that nature like "Is it legal to make a copy of ____"

it's legal to make a backup copy of any digital media as long as only the original or the backup is in use at any one time

obviously you can't distribute the original or the backup but you are allowed to make one copy for personal use

you didn't write that both the original and the backup can't be used at the same time

this is a key point in the law

    In the Netherlands it is.

Here we are even allowed to make a backup copy of a CD or DVD.
