Bittorrent Help

ok i checked around looked at the pinned topic on bittorrent, looked through all related topics and didnt really see anything that hlp, if this question has been answered well i didnt see it. Well basically i see every one talking about Bittorrent saying its fast and all that i have DSL connect 516k/bits and i use that experimental client thing, i have the upload set to unlimited and i send files at a rate of 14 kb/s but down all i can manage to get from any file is max of 5 - 6 kb/s
is there any way to speed things up or is my connection gay?
