I'd say the most popular online game has to be Asian, some Chinese games like "ChuanQi" have a user database of nearly 4 million, there's at least 3, 4 , 5? on this scale, but that's the only one i remember.
As for MP of games, i'd say CS, BF '42, MOHAA, UT2003...

no. MMORPGs are hosted by completely different kinds of servers than regular online games where a guy is hosting the game for 20 people on a server that's sitting in his closet. MMORPGs are hosted by their publishers, like Sony, who pay for a LOT of bandwidth to accomadate the players. that's why you have to pay a subscription fee for those games-- because it takes massive bandwidth to create a game with thousands of people playing together, and they have to pay administrators and technicians to maintain the servers 24/7 and to keep an eye open for cheaters.

also, the world of EQ is huge. it isn't like 5000 people on a Quake DM map. your computer does not load the entire world at once. it loads parts of the world, and when you move to other places, the computer loads those parts.

as for which game has the highest capacity per server... i would say it's EverQuest. other games probably COULD reach that kind of capacity if enough people subscribed to them, but they don't get subscribers at the same rate as EQ, so there is no reason for those games to upgrade their servers & bandwidth to match the capacity of EverQuest. the ability for EQ to host more players than any other game is because there is DEMAND for it. the other games don't have a similar level of demand from players.

going by the use of the word "massive" in the thread title, we are assuming that the first post was asking which game can host the most players on a single server. i.e. "massively multiplayer online" games which host hundreds or thousands of players in a single instance of the game.

Would have to be some sort of lottery... maybe the stock market? These are types of games arent they? Gambling after all is considered a game?
