tmpgenc and nero use the wizards they are easy

if you have tried tmpgenc your mpg wont have any sound thats because you need to decompress the audio first search for a decompressor on the link that muscle man gave you

    tmpgenc is better encoder

TMPGEnc is the better encoder than Nero, but for best results, strip the audio to a seperate wav from the avi first with Virtual Dub. This saves on any sound sync problems.

You can then select in TMPGEnc to encode the video file from the avi together with the wav you just made.

I always use Dvd2svcd combined with the Cinema Craaft Encoder and I always get great results. I suggest you'd go to Doom9. Here you can read all about converting avi to mpeg. They have some great guides. Give it a try...
