Alright since buying my latest computer back in july it's been a lot louder than my old PC.
Mainly because there's a small 40mm fan on the motherboard and one on my vid card, each running at 50% but still too loud for my liking.

First thing I want to do is get rid of that VGA cooling fan.
If I just simply disable it the card gets too hot (just idle!).

So I want to go with a passive cooler (no fan).

I remember clocker used to use something like this, if not this exact cooler:
    http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16835118216

I'm also looking at this one:
    http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16835118029

I'm not too interested in the performance of the cooler, I just want the card to run at a safe temperature when doing some occasional light gaming.
Basically, I don't use the PC for games, but if I ever want to play one I want to be able to.

What do you guys think of those I posted?

Also how hard are these things to install?

The card is an xfx 8800GT: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...?Sku=P450-8836

PS. I have some artic silver 5 that's about 4-5 years old is it still good?

PPS. My preferred sites to order from are ncix, tigerdirect and newegg as I know I can trust all of them. Anything that ships in canadia is fine I guess.

edit:: I don't even know if any of these coolers can be installed on a card this new. They seem to be older designs.

    I'd look here for inspiration.

Neither of the Zalmans would be very effective on your card I don't think.

Your AC5 paste should be fine.

I'm not a fan of Zalman either (pun intended)

    Thanks.
    Those look much more modern.

The arctic cooling accelero S1 rev2 looks like it will be the one I go with.
    Seems to get good reviews.

Just need to make a couple measurements to make sure it fits but I'm sure it will.
    Any objections?

Newegg is sold out but NCIX has it in stock.

    Was planning to.

It's ordered, just waiting for it to ship now.

From the reviews on newegg and the site clocker linked to it sounds very promising. Reports of the temps being better than stock WITH NO FAN. With a fan it's amazing, drawback being that the thing is huge.

I jsut hope it fits in my case, i never did get a chance to measure.
meh, worst case i'll donate it to one of you guys.

I've been cooling my 8800GT passively with the Accelero S1 for over a year now.
Can't post temps right now, but I remember them being well within acceptable range, even when the card was overclocked significantly.

They key to passive VGA cooling is to have sufficient airflow throughout the rest of your case.
