This is even worse when the site has some sort of catchpa system ... a simple "6 falied login attempts = 24 hour ban" system works just as well to deter brute forcing or bots.

False. The 6 failed attempts actually works better, not "just as well". Captcha codes are easier to have an automator get through them.
