Securtity tips for forum

I used have a forum run by me and some mates sharing scene releases but got hijacked by spammers. One of them being originating from 89.248.162.166.

A friend contacted me this morning wanting to restart the forum but has concerns over security.

I suggested that you banned all IP's except for the registered users and then make it invite only , He didn't like the idea

What would you do ?

If you get decent forum software and keep up to date with the patches you shouldn't have too much problem with hackers and spammers.
