Aaliyah was playing the part of Zee. Nona Gaye was substituted for her.
Also since the actor that played Tank had a contract dispute and got kicked off the movie, the explanation was that he was killed. In the movie Zee said Tank was her brother.
I think Zee was supposed to be Tank's wife but due to the circumstances the story was changed and Tank became Link (speculation)
