At least two new BR players recently caught my eye, that may be about to tip the scale toward more 'mass adoption'.

Both LG and now JVC have built BR players that do much more than simply play discs. The LG seems to do AVCHD as well as both Divx-HD and MKV, while the JVC touts both HDMI 1.3a (or something like that), plus BD+/internet features, plays MKV, and supposedly extremly fast loading to play. I've searched around for good reviews on either machine, but they're simply too new as of yet.

Since both players are internet capable, therefore can have their operating systems upgraded via that spigot.

NOW they're starting to get smart. Especially as the pricing seems to be at or below $300.

I sometimes still use my PS2 to play DVD's .

I wonder when BR/Burner prices will drop?

    Same here.

I don't even burn discs anymore.

    1. Download torrented movie.

    2. Xfer to thumbdrive.

    3. Plug thumbdrive into PS3 and watch with great pq.

Nah. The PS3 should have been the trojan horse, and only a plug-in-and-it-works $40 or so player will replace it.

Such a player does not exist, so Sony will happily try to sell you a PS3 instead. Now, unbiasedly, it is a good product, particularly if Sony keeps selling it at a loss.

But Blu-Ray goes too far to treat customers as thieves first, with all its pardon-the-cliche draconian measures in place. Make it easier for people to do what they want with the content like the old fashioned DVD, and BOOM! Instant super duper Blu-Ray sales.
