Thread: How Do I Open/use Exe/dos Files?

  1. #1
a lot of the (.exe) files that i download from kazaa have an icon that is a box with a blue strip at the top with three dots on the right. when i try to open any of these files a dos screen opens up briefly and then closes, and then nothing happens. can anyone tell me how i use/open these type of files?

    thanks, nick.

alot of files that are actually worms/viri are just like you described...generally if you try to download something and go for the smallest file that is what you will get

many different programs arrive like this. nearly always software, and not the smallest files. some programs are the only ones on kazaa and 500MB+

Software on KaZaa said the Tinman...
"NO DORTHY DON'T DO IT, IT'S TOO SCARY"

    Then the Lion replied...
"Go to ShareReactor and use eMule or Shareaza, quite safe Dorthy"

listen to what exeus said and also some programs do that because they don't have the right path to open

U get that quick pop-up because it's not a executable file. Scan it then try opening with WinRar/Zip or WinISo IsoBuster one of those will work if it is real.

ok here is what you need to do

Step 1 - Find the dos pathname and filename.

To do this right click on the folders name, click properties.
Now where it says dos name use that for your dos path.
    Example: cd c:\myshar~1
Before proceding: Repeat this step except right click on the file instead.

    Notice to Windows ME/2000/NT/XP Users:
You can skip this step and use the regular program path and filename!
Step 2 - Go to regular dos command prompt window.

On your start menu, somewhere there should be a shortcut to MS-Dos Prompt.
If your using Windows ME/2000/NT/XP, it on a submenu and called COMMAND Prompt.
    Click That
Type cd c:\(your program path) or for kazaa lite cd c:\myshar~1

Step 3 - Running the program.

Type the ms-dos filename for the program
    Example program.exe

    Step 4 - Using program.

Depending on the program, most of the time when you run the program it will
list some paremeters. Reading the readme from the program usually helps out
with use. Sorry, I can't help with any more because dos progs vary in many way and is nearly impossible to discribe a generic guide.

    Hope it helps some people!
