Thread: NewsLeecher supporting compressed headers from astraweb (XZVER)

  1. #1
I have implemented a local proxy that makes it possible to use
NewsLeecher to fetch compressed headers from astraweb, making
    headers update much faster.
Anyone interested in trying it out, please PM me here.

If it's through a proxy then what is the benefit?

LOCAL proxy, the UNcompressed data is not going over the net...

    Excellent!

Could this be made to work with other newsreaders, or other servers that use a different variation of xzver/xzhdr?

I suspect that the Newsleecher developer - even though he's been promising compressed headers for 8 months now without ever implementing them - will quickly adopt xzver/xzhdr in Newsleecher, now that he's been upstaged and this feature has literally been rubbed in his face.

It does only xzver, not xzhdr, I didn't see NL using the latter.
It can work with any server that supports this extension, but I don't
    know of anyone besides astraweb.
And yes, it can work with other newsreader clients, though I didn't
    try it.

Yes, I originally built it for linux, then used cygwin for windows.

You can take it from here:

If you give it a try, please let me know how it works out.

Well I tried it out with newsleecher in wine.
I've never used it before but the results came up almost instantly.
Even when hitting the 15,000 limit or whatever it is.
Only one thing terminal just had Waiting for connections maybe it wasn't working?
    Anyway searches were very fast.

Kind Offtopic: But does anyone know any alternatives to newsleechers supersearch for linux?
