    Windows 7 for $29.99

In an odd coincidence, and one that certainly has nothing to do with the brisk sales of Snow Leopard at its low price, Microsoft has announced low student pricing for Windows 7: $29.99, a mere ninety-nine cents more than Apple's operating system upgrade, and seventy bucks less than the Windows 7 retail price.

Source: Windows 7 Takes Pricing Cue From Snow Leopard

EDIT: I just went to order one of these and discovered two things:

    1) These are "Upgrade" versions only and are downloads. There is no disc.

    2) The Microsoft website FAQ states:

Eligible students are allowed to purchase one copy of either Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional from the online store.
But when one goes through the steps to actually purchase the OS, the only option is "Windows 7 Home".

You do know how a business works don't you? If you want free then go to Linux, that's free for a reason, lol

No i don't know how works a business...
All i know is that, this pratice to make people believe
that Windows 7 is cheap by sellin' it @ 29.99,
is a trick to get more bucks for them that's it.

And im not talkin' about Linux, so stay on Windows Topic.
Why wouldn't they make a Free Version Lite Of Windows
With basic stuffs in it, why coz they are too greedy...

But they should make one ! an opensource type of shit
and start gettin some other new clients.

Linux is probably the base for most networks, Heck OSX was based on BSD.

A business can make a huge profit if they start selling something a little lower than the competition.

My friend owns a BP station and they sell their Petrol/L a few cents lower than a BP station across the road. And guess what? They earn greater profit.

Don't bag *Unix because you don't understand it. There are many distro's you can use if you're a beginner to make things easier - Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Mint etc.

A business is to make money. Microsoft isn't a charity
