At the moment we hav five computers networked togther but to connect to the net we must have the main 1.Is there a way of being able 2 connect to the net with out having the main computer on?

Yes.

Im not a techie, and im sure there is more than one answer on how to.

Using a Router that supports NAT as a gateway for them all should work.



However it also depends upon what OS they have.

Networking with Win 98 AND XP is notoriously bad, however if they are all Win2000 or above there should be no problems.

Its not so bad to have win98, you just have to install netbios on the xp computer.

Edit it seems to be down for the moment, but its the clearest resource on networking i've seen on the net

may we ask what type of internet connection are you on?

as lond as he not on 56k he should be fine
for all those you need arouter
linksys is what i got, super easy to set up

OS choice becomes pretty much a non-factor with a router. whether you've got Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc etc, as long as it supports DHCP and has a standard web browser (like IE or Mozilla) that can be used to access the router's config page (the router generates its config access as a webpage), it's easy as pie. most desktop OS's auto-detect the LAN/router connection if you have it plugged it during OS installation.

with a broadband router (Linksys) you don't need to turn on PC that you won't be using
