your pc shouldn't do that,
and I really don't like ram programs, but you could try one and see if you get a improvment
I think Idel ram is the one someone told me to use a few years back, could have been a dream
so check download.com for ram manangers
When it goes to your desktop, if you press CTL-alt-delete - go to file - new task - "explorer.exe"
Will that bring up explorer again? if so unfortunatley you have the hardest problem to troubleshoot a explorer problem. But i would probably start with the db file in you my documents folder, alot of times that is it. You will have to enable hidden files to see it.
A nice format will do real good.

try changing the theme to windows classic.
i would remove windows messenger from your computer that will speed things up real nice!. i have found that widows messenger connects to the internet quite frequently with out your permission and hogs alot of bandwidth . try it you can always reinstall it.
