i've got concerns about the quality of motherboards Compaq uses, and when i bought one several years ago the Windows installation was mucked up with all this extra junk that i didn't need-- i had to reformat and use a pirated Win98 CD to do a clean install, because the computer came with "restore" discs rather than a plain vanilla Windows CD.

for that price? you'd prolly have to spend a little bit more $$$ to build a similar PC on your own, but the do-it-yourself method could result in a better-performing setup even with similar components. Compaqs aren't known for being hot-rods or anything. but if it does what you need it to do, more power to you. i think you paid just about what the components are worth, when you consider the value of the monitor, the scanner and Windows (assuming that they give you an actual Windows CD nowadays, in case you ever want to reinstall...).

I don't think so.
The new PCs I've seen( admittedly not all that many) all come with "restore" discs.
Apparently we aren't smart enough to decide what software we want or how to install it.

well, that's a ripoff, imho. if you pay for a copy of Windows, they should give you a copy of Windows.

The idea is that we are purchasing a single license for a copy of Windows, therefore we technically don't need the original installation CD which can be used for illegitimate purposes.

Not that I'd ever do such a thing, but there are ways around it :-"

I'm shocked that people could be so devious.

Who doesn't want to give Bill Gates $250?

If I had the money Bill Gates paid for his haircuts, I'd be rich & he'd look better.
