Wouldn't was be the past participle.
i.e. "If there was a God" suggests that God used to be but does not exist anymore. Which by definition does not make any sense, as without being infinite God cannot exist. A finite being is not God
So it would have to be "If there is a God". Or even better. "If God really exists".
