Memory Stick

i've just bought a 256mb Sony Microvault USB memory stick for college. The idea was to do away with floppies because they are so crap.

The problem is that to safely remove it from the usb port, you have to click an icon on the task bar. Unfortunately at college, with a windows 2000 limited account, this is classed as removing hardware so it won't let me. Instead i have to just pull the thing out of the usb port. Theres a activity light on the stick so i can tell if anything is being transferred but will removing the stick incorrectly eventually f**k the stick up?

Does anyone have any similar experiences?
