The original concept of 'NHB' (since renamed 'MMA') was that this was supposed to be like some kind of back-alley street fight, with no weight classes and no rules whatsoever, and anyone could just walk in off the street (presumably getting told not to bring knifes, guns, or other weapons) and enter the ring. Fighters were warned that there was a high risk of serious injury or death.

It was all about who could fight the dirtiest and most ruthless -- that's certainly how it was promoted in the early days, no doubt giving rise to the term "human cockfight" - as viewers were led to wonder if they would get to witness anyone getting killed on live television.

And here I was thinking that it was because the people involved are all such obvious dicks.
