Dogging is when you weld two 90 degree steel angle clips (with a hole on one of the sides) onto two seperate pieces of pipe, that will soon be butted together. This "dogging" method ensures that the two pieces of pipe line up correctly, before joining them together. You use a drift pin through the holes of the clips to get you started. Once the pipe is butted correctly, and lined up, you can weld your starter tacks, then remove the dogs, then you can complete the weld around the pipe.
