    well, there are 8 bits in a Byte, so 400KBytes = 3,200Kbits.
    3Mbits = 3,072Kbits = 384KBytes.
    I don't know whether there's anyone in the states offering 3Mb cable connections but many internet-savvy companies have faster connections - over dedicated lines, I believe.

    so does 3mb cable connection mean you download at 3mb a sec?

    so by rights that means a 512kb cable connection will download at max 512kb a sec ?.....

    i wish adsl downloaded at its connection speed

    Yes, that&#39;s the theoretical max but there&#39;s also other things to take into account...
    -how busy the computer the other end is (if it&#39;s busting a gut to dish out to 200 other people at the same time, it&#39;s gonna send data slower)
    -&#39;packet loss&#39; (everything comes in packets and some of them get lost&#33
    -&#39;overheads&#39; such as the packet headers. If you download a 10MB file and the packet size is small, the header information makes it slightly longer to download the file than with larger packets... with larger packets, the header information is the same size as in the smaller packets but it impacts less because there&#39;s more of the file coming along with that header. Don&#39;t ask me about more detail than this as it&#39;s about as far as I understand LOL.
