IDK, throw in some beer, guns, and perhaps a vehicle that gets poor abysmal gas mileage, and you aren't too far off describing the US over the past, say, 200 years.

I think this is where we post work related stuffs.

Over the past year, India outsourced their labor to me, and I had worked for an editing company based there. I have also been tutoring in chemistry and algebra online. The former pays shit and the latter pays modest (but cannot get full time hours).

I interviewed last week for a position doing this kind of programming thing for proprietary educational software. They needed someone who was multidisciplinary in their smartness. That just happened to be me.

I'm, like, excited. Real pay and stuff so I can stop being poor and have some extra time to finish my PhD.

Win. And it's pretty much always safe working with bespoke/proprietary shit because it’s not like just anyone can come along and do your job without having all the inside knowledge of the software, bugs, patches, version releases, documentation, client set-ups etc - the longer you work there the harder it is to replace you. And if you're programming it all then you're basically a God to them, which might be illegal in India...

I'm kinda torn on this. Sure, I wish you prosperity as a friend, but tales of desperation make me feel better about my own poverty/struggles.
