Be grateful that it wasn't Russian malware.

I think the 2nd most alarming part of that story is that he put a "plaster" on it. This is surely no time for spackle.

If you have managed to survive this long then you got smart. My hints however:

    - Have a real machine that can run virtual machines (OK not bullet point I know)
    - Download and install VMWare and work out how to register (really not hard to find keygen)
    - Create a nice clean install of a Win7 box, update make it current (kmspico is your friend here for registering)
    - Create a clone VM just for torrent downloads and find that nice working patch for hotspotshield elite
    - Install utorrent and then patch that with the obvious
    - Now download like a maniac
    - When done (with downloads) install them to a clean clone VM of a base build Win7 machine you made earlier

Then and only then - If nothing goes mad then you can transfer back to your real machine which has a virus checker on it

So with Linux you can`t trace a route back to source? Linux is spiffy for virus etc I guess (since very few use it % wise so not a main target) but unless you have some TOR plugin then how is it different from being on Windows or some Android xbmc plug etc?

Main thing is to download without a footprint (or as little as possible) and then install in a safe environment before moving back to your main use box as far as I see it... now rather easy since all PC stuff is Steam if games and if just films/tv then direct move anyway with obvious ignore extra binaries for required codecs type pants.

Depends how much Tin Foil you wear in your hat I suppose.

But since most of these malwares are exe files that people click on its pretty negated.

Ironically you tell people to search for keygens for Apps, which is probably the most malware ridden peice of code you can get.

Can not deny your point, for obvious reasons didn`t directly suggest keygens and/or serials or indeed andr.net etc (opps I did, yes purchase your license for VMware).... there has to be at least a minimum of understanding to get a valid serial for VMware and from then, virus wise, it doesn`t matter as you can and should delete the virtual clone(s) after you`ve done whatever

If you are downloading things you *ahem* probably shouldn't be (not throwing stones) there is an inherent risk there. Take as many precautions as you feel comfortable with. Ultimately the VM suggestion above is the best but potentially is overkill... again, its how much risk you are willing to live with.
