    RIAA site defaced by hackers
Submitted by belfastrab on 11/27/2003 1:04:43 AM

The RIAA has drawn the scorn of legions of Internet denizens in recent years for its stance on Internet radio broadcast fees and peer-to-peer networking. The organization became infamous to millions of users after filing an injunction against the popular free music-swapping program, Napster.
But even if and when the organization does find out what happened, RIAA spokesman Jonathan Lamy told internetnews.com he wouldn't issue any information about the defacement.
"All I can tell you is there's a problem with our site that we are fixing," Lamy said. "It should be back up shortly."
Only the home page was defaced, as far as officals can tell, though the links pointed to existing RIAA.org Web pages. The defaced site featured such tidbits as "Inside the RIAA with Eric Cartman" -- the best-known character from the irreverent Comedy Central cartoon "South Park" -- and "Piracy can be beneficial to the music industry" -- an acerbic touch flung in the face of the biggest opponent to digital music piracy.
Also, a link entitled "Where can I find information on giant monkeys?" took readers to the biography page of Hilary Rosen, RIAA chief executive officer.

    RIAA hacked AGAIN?

Great, this just helps them earn MORE 'sympathy points' from those who see us all as 'evil hacker/pirates' (esp. US Congress) and sways those on the fence in a way we don't like.

If hackers did their homework, they may find less obvious ways to 'damage' RIAA which may or may not make the news...

Like find the 'smoking gun' messages about how RIAA's been working to kill small-time mom-and-pop record stores, internet radio, and destroy the computer industry.

Then again, RIAA's been pretty open about some of that.

Really this is only like the 20th time just this year. Whats the point of someone mirrioring the defaceded shit it describes what happened in the article. Also the thing that shocks me is that they can corrupt shit like enterting those wierd noises into mp3 files but they can't even protect their own site. Is someone really hacking their site or are they trying to look like a vicitim?

Either that or they've annoyed people that are very good at doing such things (I would guess they'd have very good security on their site since its becomming more of a target). I've seen a few other of the hacks on their site (someone posted links to P2P clients and allowed people to download MP3's from the main page) which was pretty funny
