Thread: Buying A Laptop

  1. #1
Hey, a mate asked me to help him choose a laptop and i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. He's looking to spend about 1000 quid (~$1500 US), the laptop should be general purpose as he's not a big gamer but would probably like to be able to run recentish games on it (eg Unreal II / 2003 ). Battery lifetime isn't really a big concern as chances are he won't use it much on the move.
My thoughts so far were along the lines of:
    > 2GHz P4 or AMD (prob AMD cos they seem generally cheaper)
    512MB ram
2 or more USB 2 slots (seems standard)
64MB graphics (I'm gonna double check on the games thing)

Bigger the screen the better, are there different types of screen, any i should look out for / avoid?
Wireless networking might be nice, but can be added later
don't need firewire, but that seems standard as well.

So far the best one i saw was:
    Spec: Mobile Athlon XP 2500+ processor, 512MB 266MHz DDR RAM, 64MB ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 graphics, Panasonic 2xDVD RAM 2xDVD-R 1xDVD-RW 8xDVD 16xCD-R 8xCD-RW 24xCD drive, AC'97 Audio sound, 15in TFT screen with 1,400x1,050 pixels, 56K modem and 10/100 network port. Weighs 3.1kg.

Just Bought a Dell Inspiron 5150 last month.

    3.06 ghz pentium 4
    40GB hard drive
    24x CDR/DVD combo
    15' UGXA (best resolution available)
    512mb memory

I got it for $1412 but then again I have an educator's discount

Anyhow I am very happy with it this far.

I recommend you look into a dell refurbished model. Most of the time there isn't anything wrong with them they're just returned for a different model. Look at the 5100,5150 and the 8500.

    Good Luck
