    --------------------------------------------------------------

The following will enable Windows' video thumbnail extractor, which is normally enabled
by default. I can't say if this is the same or different as the one you had before.

Copy the text below into Notepad. Save as mpegthumb.reg. Then right click the new
    file and choose Merge.

For files with a different extension (.mpg, .asf, .wmv...), recopy the text and change
    .mpeg to the desired extension.

    ---begin text---

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpeg\ShellEx]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpeg\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks i have been looking for this issue.
    MetroStars
1.Once you copied it into notepad
    2.save as
    3.thumbmpeg.reg
(and in the box undrerneath called "save as type" -clik on it it and mark it to "All Files")
3b.if you dont manage that just change the extension of the mpeg.TXT to mpeg.REG
    4.close notepad -find the mpeg.reg file-rightclik -Merge-yes-ok.
you can delete the file or keep it till next time-it screws up.

you need to do this for all thumbnail extensions which dont work- so change the extension marked in red below - to - .jpeg\.tif\.bmp\.gif\-avi etc - save and merge for each.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpeg\ShellEx]
