I just clicked on that link using Opera and a window popped up. It is called "Subscribe Newsgroups" and has what appears to be a search function, a drop down menu with the address of the above link in it, and a button that say new account.Originally posted by smellycat@17 December 2003 - 00:15
And a good free one is
news://newsread4.news.pas.earthlink.net
Plenty of binaries with good retention.
Is this a newgroup reader built into Opera?
Under the above 3 things is a large scrolldown list of other similar addresses.
Can I use this to get newsgroup files? Or is this just a search engine for newsgroups themselves?
Thanks, TD
i think that the link has stopped working. i used it quite soon after it was posted and it was ok but isuspect that the provider has realised that people were hammering an unsecure addy for their groups and has shut it off (got connection refused in my ng reader tonight)
@Mant1s
It works most of the time.
Occasionally, you get connection refused, etc.
Probably too busy. Like this evening, but it's working again now.
@Tracydani
I haven't got Opera, had a quick look on their site.
I think there's a news reader built into opera, called M2.
But from what I could see, it doesn't have yenc decoding facilities,
so it wouldn't really be much use for binaries.
Your're probably better off going with a proper binary harverster like
newsbin pro or Xnews.
I've used both, and prefer XNews.
It's more powerful, but the interface is quirky.
All my invites I give freely.

Thats the one I use too..Originally posted by james_bond_rulez@16 December 2003 - 18:59
