The extended version has cut scenes which better insight into some of the characters in the movie.

i got the two towers extended edition 3cd one.
the 2 cd one has a missing chunk some where in the middle.
Greater Demon
the extended versions are just a bit better. the cut out scenes really add some insight into the storyline.
