i know, looking through that hardware guide, it makes me want to get the 9800 but past experience with ati on 3 different machines makes me afraid to go for one.
What happened to your last 3 Ati powered machines?
it was weird, none of them liked me lol, the last one was my gf's it worked before then, some installations on hr computer went wrong(nothing to do with the card) so we reinstalled everything, the last thing to install was the graphics card, it was soo anoying went through trying to install it for about a day, it kept reseting the comp, which just frustrated me because i knew it worked before, i just kept changing different settings checking bios over and over, eventually went to safe mode, changing something and it worked, cant remember what.

the other two cards one was on this pc, again the comp didn't like it, it wouldnt reset the pc it would just shut down the screen, i tryed changing the screen size, refresh rate, everything, but nothing worked. so that on was given to my brother lol, luckily I got it working on his which made me grrrr. the first one I had should have worked, as the onbourd card was ati, but it had similar problems to the one i gave to my bro, that ended up getting sold on ebay.

and that is why I get scared about buying another ati. they are great when they are going, but a real bitch when they don't like you lol

You would see a big difference in performance in those two cards, as you can see on the benchmarks.

Thanx to all for the feedback, the benchmark results were very impressive in comparison with the 4600 (which is still a good card). I've seen one online for £225, but gonna buy locally for £241.

but actually the 4600 you have isnt the one that rules the g4 family..... the 8x version (with a mighty monster chipset) even beats the 5600 easily.... so go return it

Yeah, I was dissapointed when I bought a new NF7S board (8 XAGP) recently and realised the Ge Force 4 Ti 4600 was only 4 x agp So if all works out well today at the comp shop I should end up with a better card......hopefully. I'll update later today.

All seems well now, even if they were slightly reluctant (only slightly) to send the card off, it will be 3 days before they can send it out (FKW?).

I also tried to buy a Radeon 9800 Pro today but no-one had any, no-one could even give me a delivery date (gr8 service eh, how pro). I never realised they were so rare here in Scotland/Glasgow. This prompted me to have a look online where I found several different brands using the 9800 pro chipset. My question now is:

Will it matter what brand I choose ?

I want the best card I can get even if it means paying a bit more for it. Or ultimately should I break the bank, drop the research and just get the XT and be done with it ?

These are a few examples of the many brands I have come across:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hercules 3D Prophet 9800 Pro 128MB DDR & Half Life 2 Bundle - Retail (GX-017-HE)

    (£255.56 Including VAT at 17.5%)

    PowerColor Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB - Retail (GX-006-PC)

    (£234.94 Including VAT at 17.5%)

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI - Retail (GX-017-SP)

    (£223.19 Including VAT at 17.5%)

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Crucial RADEON 9800 Pro 128MB

    Price (*VAT inclusive): £231.46

You can pick up a Powercolor or Connect3D 9800XT for about £285. No different to an Asus 9800XT.

its always better to get a card that is from the actual manufacturer that makes the chipset (ati or nvidia).... however one of those will do just fine...

its also different software bundle from brand to brand

    this article should help: http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/index.html
i have a question how come the 9600pro kiks the 9500pros ass and it even beats 9700pro

arent the 9500pro and 9700pro better than 9600pro

btw im tlkin about the clcok speeds
clocks say nothing but the time

but seriously, wanna kno why the 9500pro kills the 960pro? 9600pro has 4 pixel pipes, 9500 pro has 8. to achieve the performance of the 9500ro, it has to have almost double the clocks!!! (vb1234 check me on this im not sure if im correct)
