How do people convert their dvds to .avi, divx or xvid ?

install the divx and xvid codecs and use xmpeg or flaskmpeg

You first use a ripping program (removes macrovision) like DVD-Decryptor or SmartRipper. Then you encode the rip using a program like Gordon Knot or Vidomi just to name a few. Gordon Knot has a lot more control features but Vidomi is easier for first-timers (no AC3 though). Checkout the guides at http://www.doom9.org/ and http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ for more indepth info.
