I left my computer on whilst i was out the house, as i usually do and when i got back, the screen was black. I thought that this was natural so i moved the mouse to get the screen back but it stayed black. I hit some keys and it stayed black. Is it a one-off problem or is it some kind of virus/trojan/whatever

If its in stand by mode - you need to press the actual power button to start up the machine where it left off.
    Just check your settings here-
Right clik anywhere on desktop-properties-screen saver-power(at bottom)-
what does it say at "system standby"?

it says "never". But i also tried pressing the power button before and nothing happened. It's no problem if it's just a one-off thing. What i'm worried about is can spy software or virus/trojan do these things?

I take it was ok when you rebooted, as long as it doesn't keep happening it was probably just a glitch
