    Sphere

If your willing to learn a bit of a programming languange I recommend Sphere, it's Java based so there might be a little to learn, Java's pretty simple though, Sphere was made for Rpg's but you could probably design anything with it, even make your own mmorpg

    What the pros use ?

Uh... the pros don't use any of these programs, they code their games from scratch, that's why it takes more than just 1-2 guys to make a game.

I think you should start with C++ (or Pascal if you're not familiar with programming at all), make some simple games like Snake, Pacman, Arcanoid, etc. and then work your way up to building your own graphics engine, after which it shouldn't be too difficult to make simple (but probably crappy by today's standards) games.
