A Few Questions On Linux

can someone please answer these in detail

What is Linux?

Is it any good?

Can i run many common softwares on it?

Is it compatible with all sorts of hardware?

if the answers to the above questions are all yes, can someone please gimme links thatll help me learn to use linux.

how do i run linux witout it messing up my current OS (xp)

im asking all this cus i read about the bootable linux (morphix)...very intriguing.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Linux is a free open source operating system

It is VERY good

There are many replacements for windows programs for linux

It is compatible with most hardware except for modems, they give you trouble sometimes if you dont have a hardware (controller based is another name for it) modem. The software modems are made for windows

If you want a live cd you just put it in the drive and it boots up without messing anything up but this isnt recommended as your regular os (using a live cd) you can dual boot your system with windows or any other os

Yes, but like LSA said, it doesn't like software-based modems. If your modem (if you have one) is external, you probably don't have a problem.

Linux will probably kill your Windows install, but if you're careful it won't.

Try a Live CD of Morphix or SuSE.

Well as you've no doubt gathered by now, I'd never used Linux before last night.

It was easy and it was fun. All I had to do was set my PC to boot: from CD, put the Morphix CD in the drive, reboot and I was runnin' Linux baby!

The beauty of the Live distros is that you don't need to mess about with partitions and stuff. You won't be risking your windows installation either. Its all good.

I learnt a bunch of stuff and it's just made me hungry for more.

i do have an external DSL modem and it did need software to run in windows,
im guna dload morphix and chek it out..
and oh yeah a cuple of other questions
can i run divx files on linux?
is it more stable then windows?
is there kazaa for linux?

there is divx filters for linux and the mplayer site has some useful codecs to play other media.

linux is more stable then windows but xp is also pretty good.

and no kazaa for linux but bitorrent, emule and loads of open source p2p apps are available.

Linux n00b log - Day 2:

Morphix is kewl, but so far I've found a couple of niggling problems...

- I haven't been able to get anything out of my onboard soundcard, so playing any kind of media is strictly visual atm.
- Setting up the internet connection isn't as simple as it is in Windows either.
No matter how I try to configure the settings, it just won't dial up.

I know all this is probably just down to me being a n00b, so I'll keep trying.
Nothing worth doing is ever easy.

Configure a ppp connection. Im sure morphix has docs on their site pertaining to that.

Also, for sound you might see if their using the alsa sound server in morphix. A lot of distros due. If so just run alsa config.
