    One some guitar tabs were the fret number is it has an x, what does it mean? I need to know because smells like teen spirit uses it alot.

    X can mean open string, or do not play at all, or muted.
    If you buy a Guitar-Player magazine or one of the similar mags
    there's usually page or two (in the end maybe) explaining about the Tabs.

    muted in other words cover the strings with the parm of your hand to make a chuka sound

    Also, in Sheets i think its called a Rake.

    This is quote from Total Guitar, Tab Guide:
    X markins represent notes and strings
    that are muted by the fretting hand when
    struck by the picking hand.
    (found a Mag and had to check it out,lol...)
