.asf Files

I DLed about 5 different copies of Lost in Translation .asf but because, and correct me if I'm wrong, it is an M$ certified format, when I play any of them I just get linked to a trailer of the film, and a choppy shitty one at that.

Can anyone give me the straight dope on .asf files?

My interpretation is that they are simply locked to only be viewed on the machine they were ripped on.

can can use a early version of Virtual dub to convert them

.asf has been totally taken in by Microsoft
you can watch it thru windows media player
and i found a prog which converts it - http://www.imagespro.com/programs/2097/
or else you have to convert it using crapy movie maker

You can also convert them with AsfTools if you really need to, but like others have said you're better off just searching for the same movie in a better format.

1 I find ASF plays on my Light Alloy OK.

2 I aslo find a lot of pron Bootytalk movies are in this format which seems to produce a small file size.

3 Ho wlong does it take to convert a movie form one format to another eg say one about 20 meg file size on a Pentium 3/4 etc.

I just discovered EO Video can also convert asf files. That might be better than AsfTools because you can save the output as either avi or mpeg (AsfTools only converts to avi). But EO Video is a little slower and it can be a resource hog, so your best bet may be to start a conversion (or a batch of them) and leave your PC alone for a few hours.
