I added later that the treatment for this condition was giving the suffers human blood for the "heme" content. I guess they could drink it, but transfusions are the method of choice.

In some voodoo practises they possess other people, the possessed are sometimes called zombies. Also many other cultures have ideas of possetion and shamans to deal with them e.g. in africa, mexico, tibet, mongolia, it can be found as a concept in many relgious texts. Exorcisms are common in many religions.
