Please Help With Cygwin's Bash Shell

i've recently got and installed the Born Again Shell of UNIX from www.cygwin.com
But, I can't use it!

Everytime i click on the desktop shortcut a window similar to the DOS prompt come on for 0.1second, then it terminates! Why? How do i make it stay on?

Also, when i ran netstat from start --> run the same thing happens. is this in some way related?

please help. please.

i'm using Windows XP home edition, haven't messed much with the setups.

You need to open up a command prompt and run any cygwin executables from there

I tried that. I ran the cygwin.bat file from the DOS prompt, but it says:
'bash' is not recogonized as an internal or external command,
operable programme or batch file.

running from the prompt works with netstat though.

Then you need to add bash to your windows enviorment variable path.

Please go to cygwin.com and read the documentation more clearly. I have used cygin but found it in need of lot of development, plus its artificial. Come over to the Linux Section and we will help you install the real thing

if you wanna play with bash hook yourself up with a linux live cd. all the features of a real linux install with none of the hassel of actually installing.

shame they run a little slow but that is no biggie.

i've added c:\cygwin\bin to the path variable before, it doesn't work.
Any other suggestions?

have you rebooted in windows you need to do that so that it looks at the enviroment variables again.

Set a system restore point or something. Dont f**k up your system over cygwin

Although once you get it working it aint bad. I ran kde desktop with it before in windows. Pretty neat. But not the real deal. More less for nt administrators wanting to use unix in a windows enviorment...................blah.

didnt m$ recently release a load of tools to help with this kinda thing.

it was meant to be all based on freebsd.
