Any ideas on how to do either one? Any semi-decent ideas for a home-based business? I'm in such a location that finding more traditional work is impossible. Doesn't even have to be much money...I just need to get a few people off my back.

And no, no eBay businesses or porn rings.

are you any good at website design?

it’s an election with no Democrats, in one of the whitest states in the union, where rich candidates pay $35 for your votes. Or, as Republicans call it, their vision for the future.

Yes. But there's not much opportunity for it. Web designers are a dime-a-dozen.

well it was an obvious idea, but you said it doesn't have to make much money and if you have a good range of templates you can produce sites quickly and cheaply that customers want, unless you go for the big players then you will have to put a lot of effort in. i've seen simple sites bidded at $600 winning the contract and the site looks like something made in word for windows. the hard part is getting the clients i guess.
Working from home without a product does tend to limit choice unless you have a specific skill (which you haven't mentioned)
    i wish you luck

The problem is my skills aren't really marketable. Sigh.

And unless there are people on the net searching for a web-designer, it'll be a tough sell to the folk here.

I suppose the other option would be to take the easy way out and sign up for a course at the school. Except it's not cheap or interesting, and I'd be throwing $2000+ down the drain.

...in the middle of winter? Maybe when the solution won't freeze to the glass.

Thats a point of course, but when the spring weather starts, then those windows will need a lot of cleaning

uhmmm - how about shovelling snow then ?? -

even though webdesigners are dime a dozen, there could still be work for you in other apsects. A mate of mine actually started up a business going round and "cleaning up" puters - defrags, stuff like that. Also you might even give courses - basic web stuff for adults, word processing lessons, stuff like that ?
